The work Unknown by Gustavus Hamilton was sold in the Portrait Miniatures, Objects of Vertu, Icons, Russian and auction at Christies in London in December 2003. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 446.50 (€ 632.41), 49% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Gustavus Hamilton achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Mr and Mrs John Kirwan; he, facing right in gold-bordered blue coat and waistcoat, frilled lace cravat, powdered bag wig; and she, facing left in purple dress with lace-bordered fichu, fur stole, pearl necklace, gauze veil falling from her dark upswe in April 2002 with an auction result of GBP 4,465.00 (€ 7,224.
Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Mr and Mrs John Kirwan; he, facing right in gold-bordered blue coat and waistcoat, frilled lace cravat, powdered bag wig; and she, facing left in purple dress with lace-bordered fichu, fur stole, pearl necklace, gauze veil falling from her dark upswe im April 2002 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 4.465,00 (€ 7.224,25).
