This artwork by Gustavus Hamilton achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in December 2008. In the Important Portrait Miniatures and Gold Boxes auction, the work Elizabeth Hamilton, the artist's sister, in cornflower-blue satin robe à la française with white lace-lined stomacher, blue ruched ribbon bow tied around her neck, pearls interweaving her brown upswept hair sold for GBP 1,750.00 (€ 1,838.01) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 800.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Gustavus Hamilton - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Mr and Mrs John Kirwan; he, facing right in gold-bordered blue coat and waistcoat, frilled lace cravat, powdered bag wig; and she, facing left in purple dress with lace-bordered fichu, fur stole, pearl necklace, gauze veil falling from her dark upswe, which sold at auction in April 2002 for GBP 4,465.00 (€ 7,224.25).
