Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Brig on the Water, 1856 by Gustave Le Gray was auctioned at Christies in New York in October this year, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 20,000.00 – 30,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 15,120.00 (€ 14,307.34). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Gustave Le Gray achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Bateaux quittant le port du Havre (navires de la flotte de Napoleon III), 1856-1857 in February 2016 with an auction result of USD 965,000.00 (€ 887,927.86).
Auktionsergebnis verfehlt die Schätzpreisspanne
Als die Arbeit Brig on the Water, 1856 von Gustave Le Gray im Oktober diesen Jahres bei Christies in New York versteigert wurde, fiel das Ergebnis ein wenig enttäuschend aus. Das Auktionshaus hatte den Schätzpreis zuvor mit einer Spanne von USD 20.000,00 – 30.000,00 angegeben, von der nicht einmal die Untergrenze erreicht wurde - tatsächlich wechselte das Kunstwerk für USD 15.120,00 (€ 14.307,34) den Besitzer. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Gustave Le Gray erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit Bateaux quittant le port du Havre (navires de la flotte de Napoleon III), 1856-1857 im Februar 2016 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 965.000,00 (€ 887.927,86).
