the former signed and dated 'Cécile Villeneuve 1855.' (mid-left), the latter signed 'Cécile Villeneuve' (mid-right) and inscribed and dated on the backing paper 'Marie de Polignac Comtesse d'Argentré Paris 1870'
ovals, 1 13/16 in. (46 mm.) and 1 3/8 in. (35 mm.) high, gold brooch frame with twisted outer border; and gilt-metal mount within pierced foliate border within rectangular velvet easel stand frame engraved with the sitter's name and date 1870 (2)

The price achieved of GBP 2,987.50 (€ 4,482.35) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 2,500.00 – 3,500.00. Admittedly, works by Cécile Villeneuve have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Vicomtesse Geoffroy de Ruillé, in black dress with white lace underdress, pink rose and foliage at corsage, globular gold bell suspended on a black ribbon choker, pink rose and foliage and black lace veil falling from her upswept blond hair
