Mark Bradford is a U.S. contemporary artist known for his large-scale abstract works on paper and his social engagement. His works are based on the concept of social abstraction – translating unspectacular materials into artworks and projecting social inequalities into them. Bradford started with special paper forms, such as special tissue paper used by hairdressers, for example. He learned about it in his mother's beauty salon, where he helped out as a child. Bradford applies the paper in several layers, tearing, eroding and digging the different layers free with modern tools - a metaphor of his own artistic language. It helps him objectify social distribution.
Bradford was born in 1961 in South Los Angeles and moved to the Santa Monica neighborhood with his mother at age 11. He began his formal artistic training at the age of 31. He attended the California Institute of the Arts (CalArts) in Valencia, where he earned his bachelor's degree in 1995 and his master's degree in 1997. Just one year later, the Walter & McBean Galleries of the San Francisco Art Institute dedicated his first solo exhibition to him. In 2001, he debuted with a museum show at the Studio Museum in Harlem, New York.
Success was not long in coming: in 2006, Bradford participated in the Whitney Biennial at the Whitney Museum of American Art and won the coveted Bucksbaum Award, giving him his first major solo exhibition at the Whitney. In 2010, the Wexner Center for the Arts in Columbus, Ohio, already presented a retrospective of his work. The artist is vehemently committed to socially disadvantaged groups of the population - for example, he brings contemporary art closer to those who have only limited access to museums and cultural institutions.
He also demonstrated his social commitment in 2017, when Bradford represented the United States at the 57th Venice Biennale. In parallel, he launched the Process Collettivo project: Together with the social cooperative Rio Terà dei Pensieri, he helped incarcerated men and women in and around Venice find work and further their qualifications. Since then, a series of solo exhibitions in prestigious museums followed. Since 2018, the painting We The People, featuring the text of the U.S. Constitution, has adorned the U.S. Embassy in London. Bradford's recent solo exhibitions include Masses and Movements at Hauser & Wirth Menorca (2021), End Papers (2020) at the Modern Art Museum of Fort Worth, Texas, or Los Angeles (2019) at the Long Museum West Bund, Shanghai.

Auctions rarely end at prices below USD 10,000.
Bradfords Red Painting is part of the collection of Angela and Scott Crabill – it is privately owned, which is why it is difficult to say exactly how much it is worth. In 2021, for example, it was on loan to the Springfield Museum of Art.
