From February 19 to July 10, 2022, the Kunstmuseum Stuttgart will be dedicated to Gertrud Goldschmidt, known as Gego: the artist from Hamburg is considered one of the most important artistic personalities in Latin America in the 2nd half of the 20th century. In Gego. The Architecture of an Artist, her lithographs, wood prints and sculptures are on display. Gego began her career in 1950s Venezuela, when many artists were creating kinetic art. She focused on static sculptures called parallaxes. These appear to viewers, as they move in front of the object, also in motion.
Gego quickly achieved great fame in her new homeland and also exhibited successfully in the USA in the 1960s and 70s. Originally, she wanted to become an architect. After graduating from the Technical University of Stuttgart in 1938, she had to flee because of her Jewish background. Her German citizenship had been nullified. In Venezuela, as a woman, she was unable to gain a foothold in a technical profession. Eventually, she made a living as a visual artist. About her unwanted profession she once wrote: »Even unhappy loves have great value and their effect«.
