London, Tate Britain: »Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas«

Sculptures on chairs

With Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas, Tate Britain in London honors one of Britain's best-known female artists. She is one of the legendary Young British Artists who challenged England's art scene around 1990. Current works will also be on view here beginning Sept. 28.

September 27, 2023

Her career began in 1988, when she took part in the exhibition Freeze curated by Damien Hirst: Sarah Lucas (*1962) is one of the Young British Artists who turned the art scene in England upside down with their novel approaches. For almost 40 years now, Lucas has been dealing with themes such as the human body, mortality, gender and class identities. Her oeuvre includes sculpture and photography as well as object art, installation, and collage. Tate Britain's exhibition Sarah Lucas: Happy Gas offers a cross-section of Lucas' work and also features new works presented for the first time. Visitors can see the show in London from September 28, 2023 to January 14, 2024.

Special attention will be paid to Lucas' sculptures, which incorporate chairs. She has been making these since the 1990s and they have become one of her trademarks. Lucas also used other domestic furniture to give her works about desire and gender roles a humorous yet depressing impact and honesty. Among the artist's greatest successes was when she represented Great Britain at the 56th Venice Biennale in 2015.Art.Salon

London, Tate Britain

It was one of the most moving decades in the history of the United Kingdom: the 1980s, characterized by strikes, protests and AIDS. Photographers documented this period and in some cases became political activists themselves through their images. The exhibition The 80s: Photographing Britain opens on November 21 at the Tate Britain in London.
