This artwork by William Payne achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in July 2019. In the Old Master and British Drawings and Watercolours Including Works from the Collection of Jean Bonna auction, the work Eight landscape study roundels; including travellers before a ruin; a waterfall before a castle; a traveller crossing a footbridge; and a cottage in an estuary landscape sold for GBP 3,750.00 (€ 4,117.25) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 2,000.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by William Payne - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Shipping lying on the Tamar before Pentillie Castle, which sold at auction in May 2008 for GBP 8,125.00 (€ 10,335.36).
