Auction result well in line with expectations
The work The Costume of China. London: William Miller, 1805 watermarked 1794-1802. 4° (327 x 265mm). 48 hand-coloured aquatint plates after Alexander. (Without half-title or dedication as often, occasional spotting, some offsetting onto text leaves, one plate wi by William Alexander was sold in the Travel, Science and Natural History auction at Christies in London in April 2013. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 800.00 – 1,200.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 875.00 (€ 1,032.55) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Alexander achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Walls enclosing a city or town called Pou-een-gin, November 3rd 1793 in November 2019 with an auction result of GBP 16,250.00 (€ 19,081.47).
