UTAGAWA KUNIYOSHI (1797-1861)
Edo period (1615-1868), circa 1830-1842
An oban tate-e triptych print titled Higono kuni Minamata no kaijo nite Tametomo nanpu ni au (Tametomo Hit by a Storm on the Minamata Sea in Higo Province), depicting the shipwreck suffered by Minamoto no Tametomo (1139-1170), a flock of tengu (half bird and half man) descending from the sky to rescue Tametomo while a wani-zame (crocodile-shark) saves his retainer Kiheiji cradling Tametomo's infant son Sutemaru from drowning, published by Fujiokaya Hikotaro, censor's seal kiwame; signed Ichiyusai/Cho'oro Kuniyoshi ga. Each sheet approx., 35cm x 25cm (13¾in x 9 13/16in). (3).
