Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait of an officer, half-length, in military uniform, a sword in his right hand, in a landscape by Tilly Kettle was auctioned at Christies in London in April 2007, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 15,000.00 – 20,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 14,400.00 (€ 21,083.46). Admittedly, works by Tilly Kettle have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of Umdat-ul-Umara and Amir-ul-Umara, the two sons of Nawab Muhammad Ali Khan of Arcot and the Carnatic, three-quarter-length, wearing embroidered costumes, plumed turbans and jewellery. in September 2000 with an auction result of GBP 124,750.00 (€ 208,744.85).
