Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Thomas Phillips could be acquired at Christies in New York in April 2006 for an unexpectedly low price. In the The House Sale auction, the work Portrait of A Man In A Black Jacket With A White Cravat Holding His Glasses changed hands for USD 2,640.00 (€ 2,091.25) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of USD 3,000.00 – 5,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, seated half-length, in a black coat, holding a silver snuff-box in his right hand in November 2001 with an auction result of GBP 47,000.00 (€ 74,791.81).
