Auction result misses estimated price range
This work of art by Thomas Phillips could be acquired at Christies in London in September 2005 for an unexpectedly low price. In the British and Victorian Paintings auction, the work Portrait of John Clark Powell Esq., seated three-quarter-length, in a brown coat, with a folio inscribed 'London Assur/Corporation' leaning against his chair changed hands for GBP 1,920.00 (€ 2,817.74) - missing the lower end of the estimate range of GBP 2,000.00 – 3,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, seated half-length, in a black coat, holding a silver snuff-box in his right hand in November 2001 with an auction result of GBP 47,000.00 (€ 74,791.81).
