Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portraits Of William Miller; And His Wife Susanna Chapman by Thomas Phillips was auctioned at Sothebys in London in October 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 4,750.00 (€ 6,054.55). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, seated half-length, in a black coat, holding a silver snuff-box in his right hand in November 2001 with an auction result of GBP 47,000.00 (€ 74,791.81).
