Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait of Samuel Thornton (1755-1838), Bust-Length, In A Black Coat by Thomas Phillips was sold in the British and Victorian Paintings auction at Christies in London in November 2005. The price achieved of GBP 720.00 (€ 1,057.77) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 600.00 – 800.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Thomas Phillips achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait of Samuel Taylor Coleridge, seated half-length, in a black coat, holding a silver snuff-box in his right hand in November 2001 with an auction result of GBP 47,000.00 (€ 74,791.81).
