Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A frigate drying her sails and lying at anchor off Whitby by Michael James Whitehand was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2007, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 800.00 – 1,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 624.00 (€ 918.26). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Michael James Whitehand achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Ailsa and Britannia racing at the Royal Clyde Yacht Club Regatta in July 2004 with an auction result of USD 19,120.00 (€ 15,890.96).
