Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work The Californian clipper ship Sweepstakes passing the needles lighthouse by Michael James Whitehand was auctioned at Christies in New York in January 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of USD 10,000.00 – 15,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for USD 5,000.00 (€ 3,369.05). Admittedly, works by Michael James Whitehand have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Ailsa and Britannia racing at the Royal Clyde Yacht Club Regatta in July 2004 with an auction result of USD 19,120.00 (€ 15,890.96).
