In December 2008 a collector was able to acquire the work The American merchantman Euphrasia battling the elements with clipper well astern by Michael James Whitehand for USD 7,500.00 (€ 5,388.32). This price was achieved in the auction Maritime Art at Christies in New York and was even below the estimate range of USD 8,000.00 – 12,000.00 set by the auction house. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Michael James Whitehand - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Ailsa and Britannia racing at the Royal Clyde Yacht Club Regatta, which sold at auction in July 2004 for USD 19,120.00 (€ 15,890.96).
