Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A Dark Chestnut Racehorse Held By A Jockey, By The Rubbing Down House, Newmarket Heath by John Wootton was auctioned at Sothebys in London in December 2018, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 30,000.00 – 40,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 23,750.00 (€ 26,459.61). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by John Wootton achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work A Hunting Party; Possibly Depicting Charles Spencer, 3Rd Duke Of Marlborough (1706-1758) And His Wife Elizabeth, Countess Of Marlborough (D.1761) in July 2012 with an auction result of GBP 577,250.00 (€ 735,261.35).
