Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
When the work A Gentleman, wearing a blue jacket with fair hair, initialled lower right, the reverse with hair decoration, under glass, gold and enamel frame, oval by John Thomas Barber Beaumont was auctioned at Christies in Melbourne in March 2001, the result exceeded expectations many times over. The upper estimate was set at a - in retrospect quite modest - AUD 2,500.00 but the actual price achieved was more than three times as high at AUD 7,637.50 (€ 4,239.10). Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by John Thomas Barber Beaumont; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Unknown sold at auction in June 2010 with the realized price of GBP 5,625.00 (€ 6,840.52).
