This artwork by Jean-Antoine Watteau achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in New York in January this year. In the Old Master & British Drawings auction, the work Two studies of an actor in the costume of Crispin sold for USD 182,700.00 (€ 168,263.03) - well above the upper estimate of USD 100,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jean-Antoine Watteau achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work La Surprise: A couple embracing while a figure dressed as Mezzetin tunes a guitar in July 2008 with an auction result of GBP 12,361,250.00 (€ 15,705,107.29).

Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Jean-Antoine Watteau erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit La Surprise: A couple embracing while a figure dressed as Mezzetin tunes a guitar im Juli 2008 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 12.361.250,00 (€ 15.705.107,29).
