Artwork auctioned at three times the upper estimate price
The work Study Of Two Soldiers, One Kneeling, One Lying Down by Jean-Antoine Watteau was worth USD 197,000.00 (€ 174,490.70) to a buyer in January 2015. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master Drawings at Sothebys in New York and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of USD 60,000.00 many times over. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Jean-Antoine Watteau achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work La Surprise: A couple embracing while a figure dressed as Mezzetin tunes a guitar in July 2008 with an auction result of GBP 12,361,250.00 (€ 15,705,107.29).
