Irene Chou was born in Shanghai in 1924 and worked as a journalist after graduating from St. John’s University in 1945. Arriving in Hong Kong in 1949, Chou began to study Chinese painting under Lingnan master Zhao Shao’ang. Her career as an artist reached a breakthrough in the early 1960s when she met Lui Shou Kwan, leader and pioneer of the New Ink Painting Movement. It was under Lui’s influence that Chou began to paint in an expressive and personal manner. Chou’s works are especially k

Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
The work Zen by Irene Chou was auctioned at Christies in New York in December 2020. It achieved a price of USD 5,250.00 (€ 4,292.72), exceeding the upper end of the estimate range by 17%. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Irene Chou achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Universe Lies Within in June 2015 with an auction result of HKD 437,500.00 (€ 50,598.44).
Oberer Schätzpreis leicht übertroffen
Die Arbeit Zen von Irene Chou kam im Dezember 2020 bei Christies in New York zur Auktion. Sie erzielte dabei einen Preis von USD 5.250,00 (€ 4.292,72) und übertraf damit das obere Ende der Schätzpreisspanne um 17%. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von Irene Chou erzielen. Den höchsten von uns bisher beobachteten Preis erreichte die Arbeit The Universe Lies Within im Juni 2015 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von HKD 437.500,00 (€ 50.598,44).
