The artist C. C. Wang

  • Chinese painter, calligrapher and art collector.
  • Born in Suzhou (China) and emigrated to New York (USA) at the age of 29.
  • One of the last representatives of the Chinese literati art.

Chi-Chien Wang, known today by the abbreviation C. C. Wang was born in Suzhou (China) in 1907 and was a painter, calligrapher and collector of Chinese art. He studied under the Chinese painter Gu Linshi as early as 1924 and began studying painting under the master Wu Hufan in 1932, while at the same time studying law. In 1936, he decided to devote himself entirely to art when he was asked to act as an advisor to a committee organising the groundbreaking London exhibition of art from the Palace Museum in Beijing. This allowed him to examine all the paintings of the extensive art collection of Chinese emperors - a task that had never been given to a private individual before.

To escape the communist revolution in China, he emigrated to the USA in 1949 with his wife and two youngest daughters. A year later, his first solo exhibition was organised at the Warren E. Cox Gallery (New York). Wang is said to have based the brushwork of traditional Chinese literati landscape painting on a chance effect. This effect is created by pretreating the paper. For example, he crumpled it and dipped the protruding edges in ink or stamped it with wooden boards to create a wood grain on the paper.

The resulting lines, blobs, patterns and structures were then transformed into landscapes by adding traditional elements such as trees, houses or stones with ink or paint. He also added bright hues to suggest variations in light patterns or clouds. This is considered a variation of the splashed ink technique. Although he drew on both Western and Chinese painting techniques in his work, many of his works are considered the last authentic examples of the so-called literati art from China. The style died out with the few Chinese emigrants who still practised it after the communist revolution - Wang was the last of them. He died in New York City on 03.07.2003 at the age of 96.

C. C. Wang's art collection of historical Chinese paintings is listed as one of the largest of its kind in the world. In 1998, 25 works from his collection were given to the Metropolitan Museum of Art (New York City).
