Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Gutzon Borglum achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in June 2016. In the American Paintings, Drawings and Sculpture auction, the work John Ruskin sold for USD 4,250.00 (€ 3,852.43) - well above the upper estimate of USD 1,500.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Gutzon Borglum achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Mares of Diomedes' in March 2006 with an auction result of USD 144,000.00 (€ 118,625.92).
