This artwork by George Webster achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in London in December 2008. In the Marine Sale auction, the work H.M.S. Northumberland Off The South Foreland Commanded By Rear Admiral The Hon. Alexander Cochrane sold for GBP 20,000.00 (€ 21,005.82) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 8,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by George Webster; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A thirty gun frigate of the blue squadron off Dover castle in choppy seas sold at auction in July 2006 with the realized price of USD 45,600.00 (€ 35,725.48).
