Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A capriccio river landscape with figures fishing, the Temple of Vesta on a hill beyond by George Smith of Chichester was auctioned at Christies in London in December 2010, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 7,000.00 – 10,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 5,625.00 (€ 6,524.98). Admittedly, works by George Smith of Chichester have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work A winter landscape with a haystack, cottages and figures, a river beyond; and A winter landscape with two figures crossing a wooden bridge, a village and a church beyond in December 2011 with an auction result of GBP 25,000.00 (€ 29,941.03).
Freilich wurden Arbeiten von George Smith of Chichester auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit A winter landscape with a haystack, cottages and figures, a river beyond; and A winter landscape with two figures crossing a wooden bridge, a village and a church beyond im Dezember 2011 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von GBP 25.000,00 (€ 29.941,03).
