Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait of Mary Gell (c. 1727-1791), half-length, in van Dyck costume, in a feigned oval by George Knapton was auctioned at Christies in London in October 2015. It changed hands for a price of GBP 7,500.00 (€ 10,490.63) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by George Knapton achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait Of Lady Elizabeth Howard (1701-1739), Eldest Daughter Of Charles Howard, 3Rd Earl Of Carlisle, In Turkish Costume in July 2012 with an auction result of GBP 109,250.00 (€ 139,155.14).
