Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Francis Holman achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in November 2012. In the Maritime Art auction, the work The East India Company's ship Bridgewater successfully defending her cargo from an attack by the American privateer Hampden on her way from St. Helena to England on 8th March 1779 sold for GBP 64,850.00 (€ 79,888.62) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 25,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Francis Holman; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot A view of Blackwell Yard from the Thames sold at auction in December 2018 with the realized price of GBP 137,500.00 (€ 153,187.19).

Trotz des guten Ergebnisses ist dies nicht der höchste Zuschlag für ein Kunstwerk von Francis Holman; den erzielte unter den von uns beobachteten Auktionen die Arbeit A view of Blackwell Yard from the Thames im Dezember 2018 mit dem Hammerpreis von GBP 137.500,00 (€ 153.187,19).
