  • Preferably produced watercolours.
  • Known for his paintings of British wildlife on an atmospheric, partly dramatic background.

The artist Archibald Thorburn was born on 31.05.1860 in Lassawade (Scotland) as the son of Robert Thorburn, the portrait miniature painter of Queen Victoria. He studied at St. John's Wood School of Art in London and surrounded himself with the German artist Joseph Wolf. In 1887 Thorburn was commissioned to do the illustrations for the book Coloured Figures of the Birds of the British Isles by Thomas Powys, 4th Baron Lilford. He painted around 268 watercolours for the publication, which won him widespread acclaim. He regularly travelled to Scotland to sketch birds in the wild and became well known for his often reproduced paintings of British wildlife, mainly wild birds, on atmospheric, sometimes dramatic backgrounds.

Throughout his career, his work was regularly exhibited at the Royal Academy. He became Vice-President of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds, an organization dedicated to the protection of wild birds. He designed their first Christmas card in 1899; an activity he continued until 1935. He was also made a Fellow of the Zoological Society of London, giving him the post-nominal acronym FZS. In 1902 he married Constance Mudie and moved to Hascombe (England), where he died on 09.10.1935.

Archibald Thorburn in a nutshell

Thorburn was born in Lasswade, near the Scottish capital of Edinburgh, on May 31, 1860. He moved to London for his education at St. John's Wood Art School, but often returned to his native Scotland to study and paint nature and wildlife. The artist was also a dedicated conservationist, serving as vice-president of the Royal Society for the Protection of Birds from 1927. He spent the last years of his life in Hascombe in the south of England, where he died on October 9, 1935.

Thorburn illustrated many books, but they are hard to find today. About 140 original works were on display at the Thorburn Museum and Gallery in Dobwalls, southern England, beginning in 1972. However, financial difficulties forced the owners to sell the works at auction: in 1993, they went under the hammer at Sotheby's and were distributed among several private collections. To see a Thorburn, arguably the best bird illustrator of the 20th century, in the flesh is a rarity.

Thorburn's work is highly realistic and accurate in its depiction of wildlife. He was known for his keen observation of animals and their behaviors, which is reflected in his art. His paintings capture the intricate details of each species, from the patterns on their feathers or fur to their unique postures and expressions. His paintings often feature birds and animals in their natural habitats, surrounded by lush vegetation and scenic landscapes. The colors he used in his paintings are soft and muted, which lends a peaceful and serene quality to his work.

Finally, Thorburn's art has been influential in the field of ornithology, as his paintings have been used as a reference for identifying bird species. He was a meticulous observer of birds and their behavior, and his art is considered an important contribution to the study of birds and their habitats.

Thorburn primarily produced watercolors, which are relatively inexpensive compared to other works of art, but prices are in the high range for a watercolor. Most of Thorburn's works range from $10,000 to $50,000. Many works can also be found up to $100,000, with some reaching prices as high as $130,000. The artist achieved these high results mainly around 2017. Since then, his more affordable watercolors have dominated the market.

The artist collaborated with other important bird illustrators for several book illustrations. These include George Edward Lodge and John Guille Millais, with whom Thorburn was also friends. They illustrated books such as Natural History of British Feeding Ducks, British Diving Ducks, and British Game Birds.
