Auction result well in line with expectations
The work The Madonna and Child beside a crib in an interior, Saint Joseph seen reading through a doorway to the right by Federico Barocci was sold in the Old Master & 19th Century Paintings, Drawings & WatercoloursEvening auction at Christies in London in July 2010. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 500,000.00 – 800,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 505,250.00 (€ 607,506.20) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Federico Barocci - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Head of Saint John the Evangelist, an oil study for The Entombment of Christ in the church of Santa Croce, Senigallia, which sold at auction in January 2009 for USD 1,762,500.00 (€ 1,376,522.96).
