Auction result well in line with expectations
In June 2003 Christies in London held the auction Victorian Pictures, which included the work Hogarth's studio, 1739. Holiday visit of foundlings to view the portrait of Captain Coram. 'Hogarth painted a splendid portrait of Thomas Coram, the grand old sea-captain, who spent his fortune in cherishing deserted children, and in his old age was by Edward Matthew Ward. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 4,182.50 (€ 6,010.48) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Edward Matthew Ward achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work The Last Parting Of Marie Antoinette And Her Son in December 2014 with an auction result of GBP 92,500.00 (€ 119,078.18).
Holiday visit of foundlings to view the portrait of Captain Coram. 'Hogarth painted a splendid portrait of Thomas Coram, the grand old sea-captain, who spent his fortune in cherishing deserted children, and in his old age was von Edward Matthew Ward zur Versteigerung kam.
