Auction result well in line with expectations
In March 2017 Sothebys in London held the auction Two Great Scottish Collections: Property from the Forbeses of Pitsligo and the Marquesses of Lothian, which included the work Portrait Of Sir John Belsches Wishart, Later Stuart, 3Rd Bt. (1752-1821), Half-Length, Seated, Wearing A Grey Coat With The Order Of Novascotia; And His Wife, Lady Jane Leslie Melville (1753-1829), Wearing A Green Dress Edged With Pearls And A Blue Waistb by David Martin. The estimated price for the artwork was previously given by the auction house with a range of GBP 8,000.00 – 12,000.00, the actual price achieved of GBP 8,750.00 (€ 10,254.14) could thus just exceed the lower estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by David Martin - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work [Portrait of James, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741-1817), three-quarter-length, in a cream suit, seated at a desk reading; and Portrait of his wife, Lady Elizabeth
