Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Portrait Of Alexander, 9Th Earl Of Leven And 6Th Earl Of Melville (1749-1820), Half Length, Wearing A Green Coat And Waistcoat, White Stock And Holding His Hat In His Left Hand by David Martin was auctioned at Sothebys in London in March 2017. The price achieved of GBP 4,750.00 (€ 5,566.53) was within expectations - the estimate range had previously been set by the auction house as GBP 4,000.00 – 6,000.00. Admittedly, works by David Martin have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of James, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741-1817), three-quarter-length, in a cream suit, seated at a desk reading; and Portrait of his wife, Lady Elizabeth Carnegie, Countess of Hopetoun (d. 1793), three-quarter-length, in a blue dress, seated wit in October 2001 with an auction result of USD 23,500.00 (€ 26,131.44
