Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of David Leslie, 8Th Earl Of Leven And 5Th Earl Of Melville (1722-1802) by David Martin was auctioned at Sothebys in London in March 2017, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 6,000.00 – 8,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 5,250.00 (€ 6,152.48). Admittedly, works by David Martin have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Portrait of James, 3rd Earl of Hopetoun (1741-1817), three-quarter-length, in a cream suit, seated at a desk reading; and Portrait of his wife, Lady Elizabeth Carnegie, Countess of Hopetoun (d. 1793), three-quarter-length, in a blue dress, seated wit in October 2001 with an auction result of USD 23,500.00 (€ 26,131.44
