In April last year Sothebys in London held the auction Old Master Paintings, which included the work Queen Elizabeth going in procession to Saint Paul's Cathedral after the destruction of the Spanish Armada by Benjamin West. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 11,340.00 (€ 13,522.55), 42% above the upper estimate. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by Benjamin West achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Portrait Of Prince William (1776-1834), Later 2Nd Duke Of Gloucester And Edinburgh, And His Elder Sister, Princess Sophia (1773-1844) Of Gloucester in July 2013 with an auction result of GBP 578,500.00 (€ 661,037.08).
