Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work Portrait Of A Gentleman, Three-Quarter-Length, In A Black Coat And Shirt With Lace Collar And Cuffs, Holding Gloves In His Left Hand, Leaning Against A Chair by Bartholomeus van der Helst was auctioned at Christies in London in December 2014, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 250,000.00 – 350,000.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 242,5 Other works by Bartholomeus van der Helst have also sold for higher prices; the highest price we have seen at auction so far was achieved in July this year by the work Portrait of Sophia Coymans (1636-1714), three-quarter-length, holding a twig with an orange, before a landscape at GBP 504,000.00 (€ 588,015.25).
