The artist Elizabeth Peyton

  • Contemporary US portrait painter.
  • Has held a professorship at the Kunstakademie Düsseldorf since 2015.
  • Her Angela Merkel portrait illustrated the 2017 Vogue cover story.

Elizabeth Peyton is a US painter who clearly focuses on portraiture. Primarily, Peyton works in oil paint, although she also occasionally pursues drawing and watercolour.

Peyton's oil paintings are characterised by bright, glowing colours and a high-gloss glaze. She uses snapshots of friends as well as images from magazines and books, record covers and stills from music videos as models for her typical portraits. For the artist, it has never been relevant whether she knows the people depicted personally or not - she usually does not. Much more decisive for her is the path the portrayed people have taken: Every person who is an inspiration to her is worthy of being depicted. A resounding success for Peyton was a portrait of former German Chancellor Angela Merkel, which illustrated the cover story of German Vogue in 2017.

Born in 1965 in Danbury, Connecticut, Elizabeth Peyton moved to New York at the age of 16 to attend the School of Visual Arts. Not much is known of Peyton's private life, only her 13-year marriage, which she entered into in 1991 with fellow artist Rirkrit Tiravanija, is public.

Since 2015, she has also been working at the Düsseldorf Art Academy, which is why her works are frequently exhibited in Germany and Europe. Her works on paper, oil paintings and prints could be seen, for example, from 2009 to 2010 in the collective exhibition Ich, Zweifellos at the Kunstmuseum Wolfsburg, in 2011 at the Opelvillen in Rüsselsheim am Main and in 2013 at the Kunsthalle Baden-Baden under the title Here She Comes Now. In 2021, the Fondation Beyeler in Basel showed parts of her work in the woman-centred exhibition Close-up.
