Upper estimated price slightly exceeded
In December 2016 Christies in London held the auction A Surreal Legacy: Selected works of art from The Edward James Foundation, which included the work Portrait of a boy playing golf by the shore by Bartholomeus van der Helst. Here, the upper estimate of GBP 150,000.00 was slightly exceeded - the artwork found a new owner for GBP 161,000.00 (€ 188,235.12). However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Bartholomeus van der Helst - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Portrait of Sophia Coymans (1636-1714), three-quarter-length, holding a twig with an orange, before a landscape, which sold at auction in July this year for GBP 504,000.00 (€ 588,015.25).
