Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Badri Narayan achieved an unexpectedly high price at Sothebys in New York in March last year. In the Modern & Contemporary South Asian Art auction, the work The Watermelon Seller's Family sold for USD 37,800.00 (€ 34,075.54) - well above the upper estimate of USD 18,000.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Badri Narayan; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot without title sold at auction in September 2008 with the realized price of USD 74,500.00 (€ 52,908.17).
