Oblong quarto (215 x 280mm). 104 black and white photographs. Original drab boards with cloth spine, original grey and white French-fold dust jacket pasted down at spine, as issued (small chips and short tears at spine ends and corners, some light fading and soiling). Provenance: Calignani booksellers, Paris (small contemporary label).
FIRST EDITION. 'A LEGENDARY PHOTOBOOK,' and 'certainly one of the most cinematic and dynamic photobooks ever published' (The Photobook). It is a radical work, both in layout and technique, which pointed out a new way in which photographers could work. 1 of 500 copies, the entire edition. A very good copy of a fragile book. 101 Books, pp.110-13; The Open Book, pp.136-37; The Photobook, pp.240-41; Regards à travers le livre 85.

The »bidding war« ended at GBP 4,750.00 (€ 5,565.28), 58% above the upper estimate. Admittedly, works by Alexey Brodovitch have also been auctioned for a multiple of this price - according to our records, the highest result so far was achieved by the work Ballet (Boutique Fantasque), 1935-37 in October 2006 with an auction result of USD 45,600.00 (€ 35,700.31).

Die Arbeit Ballet. New York: J.J. Augustin, 1945. von Alexey Brodovitch wurde im Mai 2010 in der Auktion Photobooks bei Christies in London versteigert. Das »Bietergefecht« endete beim Preis von GBP 4.750,00 (€ 5.565,28) und damit 58% über dem oberen Schätzpreis. Freilich wurden Arbeiten von Alexey Brodovitch auch schon für ein Vielfaches dieses Preises versteigert – das bisher höchste Ergebnis erzielte nach unseren Aufzeichnungen die Arbeit Ballet (Boutique Fantasque), 1935-37 im Oktober 2006 mit einem Auktionsergebnis von USD 45.600,00 (€ 35.700,31).
