Yto Barrada, born in Paris in 1971, turns to identitarian issues in her multimedia approaches: Her installations, sculptures, films, photographs and textile works tell cultural, political and the personal story. They bring out repressed traditions, feminist ecologies, alternative strategies of knowledge acquisition, and her family history. Barrada uses them as vehicles to fundamentally critique modernism.
Kunsthalle Bielefeld will showcase the French-Moroccan artist's most recent works beginning March 25. The title Bad Color Combos also reveals the ways in which Barrada brings color into play. Together with the Stedelijk Museum Amsterdam and with the support of the cultural foundation pro Bielefeld, the Kunsthalle is hosting a free exhibition through July 30 for anyone interested in the contemporary, multimedia, political work.
