Artwork auctioned at four times the upper estimate price
The work Portrait Of Thomas Western (1714-1766), Small Full-Length, In His Study At Clare Hall, Cambridge by William Hogarth was worth GBP 248,500.00 (€ 337,451.05) to a buyer in December 2015. This price was achieved in the auction Old Master & British Paintings Day Sale at Christies in London and exceeded the previously set upper estimate of GBP 50,000.00 many times over. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by William Hogarth; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot The Pugilist: A Quarterstaff Player, almost certainly James Figg (1684-1734) sold at auction in December 2020 with the realized price of GBP 375,000.00 (€ 418,908.42).
