Auction result misses estimated price range
When the work A View of the south side of the Fort of Gwalior, from Select Views in India, (Abbey Travel 416 no. 6) by William Hodges was auctioned at Christies in London in May 2008, the result was somewhat disappointing. The auction house had previously given the estimated price as a range of GBP 400.00 – 600.00, of which not even the lower limit was reached - in fact, the artwork changed hands for GBP 200.00 (€ 254.41). Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by William Hodges achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Matavie Bay in the Island of Otaheite (Matavai Bay, Tahiti) in October 2019 with an auction result of GBP 659,250.00 (€ 764,682.72).
