Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by Thomas Hargreaves achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in Melbourne in March 2001. In the THE CARTER COLLECTION auction, the work John Blayds, wearing a blue coat, yellow waistcoat, white stock and a monocle hanging around his neck, signed and dated on the reverse 1830, oval giltmetal mount and half leather case sold for AUD 4,465.00 (€ 2,478.24) - well above the upper estimate of AUD 1,500.00. Despite this good result, it is not the highest hammer price for an artwork by Thomas Hargreaves; that achieved among the auctions we observed the lot Anne Earle, facing right in white dress, lace-bordered white surcoat, pale pink cashmere stole draped over her left shoulder, a lorgnette on a long gold chain pinned at waist, lace mob cap tied under her chin in her dark brown hair, her right elbow r sold at auction in June 2003 with the realized price of GBP 2,629.00 (€ 3,778.02).
