In May 2001 Christies in London held the auction Objects of Vertu, Miniatures and Icons, which included the work A lady and a gentleman: she, half length in white dress with short puffed sleeves and a red stole over her arm, her dark hair in ringlets; he, in navy blue coat and yellow waistcoat, frilled white cravat by Thomas Hargreaves. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 763.75 (€ 1,280.44), 27% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by Thomas Hargreaves - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Anne Earle, facing right in white dress, lace-bordered white surcoat, pale pink cashmere stole draped over her left shoulder, a lorgnette on a long gold chain pinned at waist, lace mob cap tied under her chin in her dark brown hair, her right elbow r, which sold at auction in June 2003 for GBP 2,629.00 (€ 3,778.02).
