Upper estimate price exceeded by more than 100%
This artwork by John Gilbert achieved an unexpectedly high price at Christies in London in September 2004. In the British and Continental Watercolours auction, the work The Finishing Touches sold for GBP 1,135.25 (€ 1,653.92) - well above the upper estimate of GBP 500.00. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by John Gilbert - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work The marriage of Katherine and Petruchio: The Taming of the Shrew, which sold at auction in November 2012 for GBP 5,000.00 (€ 6,159.49).
