Auction result well in line with expectations
The work Meleager presenting Atalanta with the Boar's head; Study for the Staircase Mural at Sherbourne House, Dorset by James Thornhill was auctioned at Christies in London in July 2010. It changed hands for a price of GBP 875.00 (€ 1,052.09) achieving a result in the upper range of the estimate price range of GBP 600.00 – 900.00. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by James Thornhill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Proposed Design For The Saloon Ceiling At Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire: The Apotheosis of Hercules in June 2005 with an auction result of GBP 45,600.00 (€ 67,582.08).

Dabei wechselte sie für einen Preis von GBP 875,00 (€ 1.052,09) den Besitzer und erzielte damit ein Ergebnis im oberen Bereich der Schätzpreisspanne von GBP 600,00 – 900,00. Dieser Preis hat freilich nichts mit den Spitzenpreisen zu tun, die andere Arbeiten von James Thornhill erzielen.
