In July 2016 Christies in London held the auction Old Master & British Drawings, which included the work Study for the ceiling design for the Queen's State Bedchamber, Hampton Court Palace ( recto ); and Study of a winged figure ( verso ) by James Thornhill. The »bidding war« ended at GBP 20,000.00 (€ 23,764.33), 67% above the upper estimate. However, buyers have had to dig much deeper into their pockets for other works by James Thornhill - we have observed the highest auction result to date for the work Proposed Design For The Saloon Ceiling At Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire: The Apotheosis of Hercules, which sold at auction in June 2005 for GBP 45,600.00 (€ 67,582.08).
