Auction result misses estimated price range
In June 2001 a collector was able to acquire the work Preliminary Studies For The Walls And Ceiling Of A Chapel, Depicting The Seasons, Boreas And Orythia, Zepharius And Flora And Bacchus And Ariadne, And Seven Planets by James Thornhill for GBP 1,175.00 (€ 1,951.91). This price was achieved in the auction British Art on Paper at Christies in London and was even below the estimate range of GBP 1,200.00 – 1,800.00 set by the auction house. Of course, this price has nothing to do with the top prices that other works by James Thornhill achieve. The highest price we have observed so far was reached by the work Proposed Design For The Saloon Ceiling At Blenheim Palace, Oxfordshire: The Apotheosis of Hercules in June 2005 with an auction result of GBP 45,600.00 (€ 67,582.08).
